Church of Bacchus

Welcome to the Church of Bacchus, a virtual non-profit church reviving the ancient religion of Dionysus

Throughout history, theaters have served as temples of Bacchus. Therefore, donations to the church will go towards constructing a modern Theater of Bacchus, which will both produce and host theatrical works. Initial donations will fund food truck giveaways, which will be the main charitable operation of the church

As the origin of the theatre, Bacchus is well represented in modern society. Netflix alone has roughly 250 million subscribers, tithing monthly tributes to the theatre

Society often limits "god" to the idea of an omnipotent person or deified prophet. This ignores how gods can represent our spiritual connection to the world, manifested as an idea form within us. They can be our mystical guides and a collective source of creation

This church is for supporters of art & theatre. For people who care about personal freedom and equality. A community of people who are curious about the mysteries of life and death and who believe in the Tradition of Criticism. Ancient mysteries and rites of Dionysus were attended by similar people

The first and only official tenet of the church is, you do Not talk about Church of Bacchus. Allow religious conversation to come up naturally. No proselytizing or buffeting people with your personal mystical beliefs

If you prefer video, the Sermon of Bacchus YouTube channel features Birdy discussing his observations about modern society, along with challenging emotional and spiritual topics

For a scholarly history of this 3000 year old tradition, this link has PhD Brian Muraresku explaining the Mysteries of Eleusis on The Practical Stoic Podcast

Is this real?

"The god who sends the mind reeling. the god who appears to mankind in the most urgent immediacy is welcomed and feted by the women in an absolute ecstasy and excess of rapture.

History tells again and again how his fury ripped them loose from their peaceful domesticity, from the humdrum orderly activities of their daily lives for the purpose of making them into dancers in the wilderness and the loneliness of the mountains, where they find him and rage through the night as members of his revel rout."  - Walter Otto, Ordentlicher Professor for Latin Literature 1933
